Founding Story & Editorial Commitment

Thistle & Seam started because our founder kept hitting the same wall reading fashion sites: the same recycled press releases, rewritten ten different ways, with nobody actually checking whether the claims held up on a real body in real weather. After one too many 'investment coats' that pilled within a month, the decision was to start something smaller and slower, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, where every piece would be checked before it went out.

That meant building a different kind of process: editors who have actually handled fabric, washed the items they write about, and spoken to the tailors and shop owners who deal with clothes every single day. Nothing goes up without someone on the team being able to say, honestly, that they checked it themselves.

It also meant being upfront with readers. No sponsored piece gets written to order, corrections are published openly rather than quietly edited away, and every reader email gets read by a real person, not a form response. That is the whole operating model, and it is the reason the site exists at all.

Honesty Over Hype

We'd rather tell you a coat sheds colour in the first wash than pretend every item we cover is perfect. Readers come back because they trust the warning as much as the praise.

Plain Explanation

A term only helps if it's explained, so we define things like drape or bias cut the first time they appear, the same way you'd explain a recipe term to someone who has never baked before.

Local Grounding

We write from Newcastle upon Tyne and test things the way people here actually live with them, through real North East weather and real washing machines, not a studio.

We publish only what we have checked ourselves, from fabric care instructions to fit advice, because a fashion guide is only useful if it is true. If we get something wrong, we correct it in the open and tell you exactly what changed.
